“My dad was diagnosed with a brain tumour just over 10 years ago, and he was only given 4 months to live. Basically, it was the end of his life, so I wrote to every single person he admired. All the famous celebrities, newsreaders, singers, football teams… It took a lot of work, and a lot of letters back and forth, and he received loads of cards which was very kind. But later Katie Melua came to the house and played him a live set. The most amazing thing about that was, even though he was a very sick man – the tumour affected him cognitively, and it was very difficult to see somebody change so much – but when Katie Melua came that day, he switched back to his old self. It was as if the adrenalin totally changed him. When I look at the overall relationship with my father, we’ve had our ups and downs, but having such a beautiful memory where you can see you’re losing somebody, and then they just come back, was very special… Just to show I’m still here, and the love we shared in that moment… It was a beautiful day, and the great last memory I have of him being truly happy.”
