“I was born with a lot of disabilities. The funny thing is that I don’t see my deafness as a disability, especially in the Deaf Village. It’s an amazing place. Everyone signs there. When I’m at home I have TV with subtitles, my books, and my phone. Technology on phones and apps like Facebook, Skype and Face-Time have revolutionized communication for Deaf people. We love Facebook! Nobody else in my family is deaf so if I spend a few days with them I become exhausted and sometimes lose my voice because I’m not used to talking all the time. This might sound weird to some people but sometimes I really love getting home and just turning off my hearing aid. It feels amazing. It feels more normal, and actually, it is the hearing aid that makes me feel disabled.”
