“It was just one of those nights where all your plans get screwed up. I was meant to be meeting friends and I was all ready to go out and join them, but no one was answering their phone. I decided to complain about my loser Friday to one of my best friends back in Russia, Valia. She was travelling to another city with her friends for a bachelorette party. So I wrote to her and her answer was really short. All it said was ‘Oh Nina we’re having so much fun and I’m so drunk. I love you loads and please remember that you are never alone. You are never alone.’ I answered that I love her too, but, to be honest, I was a bit surprised with her message because we were in touch regularly but we didn’t really tell each other very often that we love each other. Within a few hours, the driver in her car fell asleep and they crashed into a tree. She died immediately. Those were actually her last words to me. When I woke up in the morning, I was still wondering why my night out didn’t happen. And then another friend of mine called and told me the news. This is when I realized that actually last night worked out because we had that last moment to say ‘I love you.'”
