“This isn’t my normal job. I used to dig-up roads, but I had a few little accidents. One day I was digging a road out in Kildare, and the machine I was working with was supposed to fill a lorry truck. I didn’t know the lorry driver, so I went down to shake his hand and ask what his name was. Before I could introduce myself the machine exploded behind me. It hit a gas main. It shouldn’t have happened at a depth of 280mm, but it did, and I was very lucky. Since then it’s happened two more times. It has never happened to anyone in Ireland and yet I’ve managed to blow up three machines and stay alive. So if somebody up there had something to do with this, well… maybe I was a bit slow, but here I am, gardening! And life is beautiful…”
