
“I was born with a congenital heart block, so I have a pacemaker. In school, they actually thought I had a learning difficulty – because of the pacemaker!? They thought it mentally affected me; that I was dyslexic. For some reason, they even made me exempt from learning Irish. My mam didn’t take any shit. She fought tooth and nail for me. By 3rd class, I had the reading age of a 13-year-old. In the first year of secondary school, I was student of the year in German. In the second year, I was student of the year in Irish. Luckily, my mam sees the qualities that a kid has. Schools don’t always see that.”
