“I sing in a choir, I sing in the shower, I sing to my children- I’m singing all of the time! I have a seven-year-old son and a nine-year-old daughter, and both of them are autistic. One of them doesn’t talk or understand when you talk to her, but she seems to understand when I sing to her. She can really feel what I’m trying to say to her from time to time, so I sing what I need to say and she reacts to it. If you have autistic children you learn to give and to receive love without words. You also learn how to be patient and to accept things the way that they are. Everyday life can throw you a lot of challenges too, like getting a degree, or working part time, while trying to manage a healthy relationship, without failing to give them the care that they need at the same time. You can’t really wonder about their future, you need to take it day by day…and in the meantime, I sing! Singing always makes me happy, and it grounds me after a tough day.”
