“I studied social care and one of the areas I worked in was with homeless men. I volunteered with Dublin Simon for nine months, and then I heard of a job opening with Salvation Army which I went for. It’s an issue I was always interested in, and I particularly enjoy working with people with mental health issues. I feel a lot of empathy for them, given that my sister suffers from mental health issues, so I know how it is. I started a small music group with another girl. She plays guitar and I play the piano and sing, and seeing the clients come along and get involved and even cases where they write their own music! It’s just so much fun. People may think that working with homeless people is very sad and depressing, but it’s totally the opposite. Working and helping these people is a two-way thing, and you get so much more out of it than you could ever put in. Especially seeing them progress, and be the part of their success, keeps us there. I also have an amazing team to work alongside, and being around people who are so positive, caring and supportive makes me excited to get up in the morning and come to work.”
