“In 2010 I met a young woman who was depressed. Six weeks later she died by suicide. I attended the funeral the following week and it had a profound effect on me personally. This mother was one of many battling with postnatal depression and had been on a public waiting list for counselling for nine months already. Private counselling sessions are around 90 euros/hour. I felt there was no help for people in middle class or under… I felt I had to do something about it. We had a sizeable house down in Rush so one evening I presented my idea to my husband. He said yes, and this is how we converted our family home to be a low fee counselling centre with support groups for women. We called it Nurture.”
This is Irene Lowry. She founded Nurture, a low-fee/ free counselling service. She is a previous winner of the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Award.
