always enjoyed helping out on our family farm but never planned to become a farmer

“I always enjoyed helping out on our family farm but never planned to become a farmer! I studied economics and politics in Trinity. At first, I wanted to work in investment banking but later I changed my mind and I became a journalist working for a media company. I loved it but then, Da got sick. He couldn’t work at the farm anymore, so I came home to help out. He wasn’t meant to be sick for long but he got kidney failure and needed a donor; he had to wait five years to get one. In the meantime, I just kept the farm going and I was always thinking about creative ways of using the land. I saw the trend of Halloween was getting more and more popular in Ireland so I decided I would try to grow pumpkins for the craic and open the farm to visitors. The first year was very small. No-one had any idea what I was on about. I was standing at the entrance for three weeks, and let’s just say I wasn’t very busy… My Da would come around and he would be like; ‘You’re cracked! Stop doing this, you’re just wasting your time and making an idiot of yourself’… But here we are now! Just a few years later I have thousands of families coming to have a day out, to get muddy and adopt a pumpkin with their children. You know, I could’ve worked for an investment company, but I bet I wouldn’t have had so much fun!”
